Tiger Wins Ford Championship
March 6, 2005
Tiger made $990,000 and won a car in a weekend doing what he loves. This is a driving factor for may aspiring poker players, to do what they love and be able to make big money while they do it.
They say if you want to achieve something study someone who has achieved what you want. Let’s look a little closer at Tiger. If any of you saw him playing in the Ford Championship would have saw a very focused individual. He left the 17th hole with a one-point lead over Mickelson.
“After both players split the fairway at the difficult par-4 18th, Woods knocked his second shot pin-high on the right fringe, while Mickelson’s approach sailed just over the back edge. After Woods ran his birdie putt past the hole, Mickelson nearly chipped in from 30 feet, the ball catching the right edge of the hole … After a spent Woods finished off his par putt, he exhaled, hugged Williams, then pointed at the new car he had won. ”

While all this was going on you could tell by the look on Tiger’s face that he was focused on one thing and only one thing his next stroke. He was not think about the mistakes he had made a few holes back, about driving that new car along the beach or about even what Mickelson was doing now. He was just focusing on what his next stroke would be and what it would require of him.
So often when we sit down at the poker table either in a tournament or a rink game we do it with out focus or we lose our focus quickly. If there is any hope that some day you will win $990,000 and a car for weekend of work you will have to focus and stay focused. When you are focused on you goal you will not get caught up in playing a hand just because you are steamed or folding a great hand because your opponent is trash talking you. Before you sit down at the poker table ask yourself, “Why am I seating down here?” then remind yourself at the beginning of each hand of the answer to your question. This will help you to remain focused on you goal.
