When you are playing poker online you are not concerned with the values of chips because the value of your chips is clearly written on the screen. When you walk into a poker room and buy chips the chips are clearly marked. When chip values become important is when you are playing a home game. The first rule is of chip values is if in doubt ask and ask again most likely every house game you play in will have different rules. I see some player go as far as writing it down. Some players will arrange one chip of each in front of them to help them remember the value of the poker chips. Do what ever works for you without slowing down the game or giving info to other players (tells).
There is an official value of chips according to "The World of Order and Organization" by Barbara Ann Kiper
From highest to lowest
- Yellow or black: equal to 100 white chips
- Blue chips: equal to 10 or 20 white chips (agreed by table)
- Red chips: equal to 5 white chips
- White chips: lowest value
For example if you say whites are 10 then red would be 50, blues 100 or 200 and the yellow or blacks would be 1000. As you can see even with the "official" poker chip values there is allowances for differences. So before you start tossing chips into the pot make sure you know what they are worth.
